‘ta dan ta dan’ is the repetitive Mandarin pronunciation of ‘踏蛋’, which can be roughly translated as ‘walking on the egg’. This work is collaborative project with Lin’s jewelry sculpture and poem, Skating On the Poached Egg, in which Lin portraits the unbalancing feeling of trying to fit in a foreign metropolitan city.

The installation incorporates diary film projections (the super 8 films were shot during Lunar New Year in 2019 in Taiwan, and the digital film was shot on iPhone from 2016 to 2019 in the US, mostly New York City) and an automata jewelry box in a paper sculpture to establish a temporary space in which to meditate on the transformative process accumulating from daily life.

Skating On the Poached Egg

Tai-Yi Lin

Being balanced while skating on the poached egg

is tough sometimes a forward swizzle like hugging

with the mouth of October sometimes a backward wiggle like kissing

with the arms of s'more so cooling so warm

I dip and hop I hop and dip ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

from both sides coining balance while skating

on the poached egg ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

在水波蛋上滑行

林太乙

水波蛋是紐約這座城市,

它那搖擺起伏的誘人律動,

孕育出紐約人彈性敏捷的動態日常線條。

我們戒慎恐懼,任由它向我們冷嘲熱諷,

我們悠然自得,任由它對我們赤誠以待;

試圖不狼狽地

穩住重心。
